Creating the Express Entry Profile and Entering Pool

Expressing your interest to migrate to Canada.

Creating your profile simple means you are showing your interest to immigrate to Canada; you may qualify to receive an invitation to apply after you create and submit your profile. It is your ITA that will enable you to apply for permanent residence.

Once you have satisfied at least the minimum requirement to qualify for Express Entry Program, you may proceed to create your free online profile on the IRCC website.

For emphasis, before creating the profile, you must:

  • Confirm that your work experience is valid for the federal skilled worker program by choosing the appropriate NOC code.
  • You must take the approved English and/or French language proficiency test. Then book the English test (IELTS).
  • If you have acquired your qualifying education outside of Canada, you and your spouse need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from a designated organization like WES.
  • You must score a minimum of 67 points in the skilled worker selection factor.

Once you have your IELTS and ECA, and you appear to meet the eligibility criteria for the federal skilled worker program, you can create your free Express Entry Profile.

If your profile is approved, you will be accepted into the Express Entry pool.

Let us proceed to the illustration on how to create your free Express Entry profile using some fictitious information just to show you how it works.

Step by Step Guide to Creating the Express Entry Profile

Sign Up on the IRCC Website

To begin, create an account with the IRCC website: Here

  • On the “Create account or Sign in the page”, click on “Go to GCKey” to sign up and begin creating your profile – on the page that follows, click on “Sign Up” on the right panel, accept the terms and conditions choose a Username and click “Continue”.
  • Type in your password, ensure they match and click “Continue”.
  • Choose your recovery questions and security answers then click “Continue”, click “Continue” on the page that follows also. Ensure you take note of the Recovery questions you chose and the answers you provided for them, as you may need them at a later time. Accept the “Terms and conditions” on the following page to proceed.
  • Write your names and email address in designated given spaces, choose a preferred language and click “Continue”.
  • Create your security questions and ensure you save them somewhere close by. You will need these questions as you interact with your account. And with that, your account is set up.

Beginning your profile: Creating your Express Entry Profile

  • Scroll down in your IRCC account. Under the segment titled “Start an application”, click on the hyperlink “Apply to come to Canada”.
  • The link will take you to your Personal Checklist page, which will request that you enter a Reference Code, but since you do not have a Reference Code, click on the blue button labeled “Express Entry (EE)”. This will guide you through a questionnaire/wizard to determine your eligibility; provide answers to each question asked by the wizard and fill in all required information, then click “next” to proceed.

Ensure you read the questions carefully to avoid filling in invalid or incorrect information. Once completed, you will be taken to your CIC account page. Your account page may appear as shown in the preceding picture.

  • Click on the “Check full application status” link indicated to proceed to your Express Entry Profile; your profile may appear similar to the illustration shown in the following picture.
  • Once in your Express Entry Profile, you can click on the “Start form” button for each of the form names in your personalized checklist. You can begin with any of the forms.
  • You may start by filling the “Personal details” form; click the “Start form” button on the rightmost column in the row named “Personal details”, the form opens as shown below.
  • Fill the required information, clicking “Save and add” where necessary. As you complete each segment of the “Personal details” form, ensure you click “Next”, so that the information you have filled will be accepted by the form, and the next segment will be opened to you. You will repeat the process for all the forms in your profile and their sub-forms. It is advisable that you have all information at hand before you start filling the forms in your profile; however, if you do not have the complete information, you can save and exit the form, then come back to it at a later time. There is a “Save and Exit” button below the forms table in your profile.

Your forms may time-out along the way, you can continue by logging in again.

  • If you have filled all the required information in all the forms, and they are accepted by the form, your personalized profile checklist should look like the below.

Notice that the “Status” column for all the forms says “Complete”. You can change any information you have filled into this form. Take note that if there is any change in your situation – (e.g. marital status, new language test result, change of employment situation or international passport, etc.) – you can come back to your profile, click the “Update form” button for the corresponding form, update the information in it and save it.

Once you are satisfied with the information you provided, click the “Continue” button below your form. This will bring you to your “Declaration and electronic signature page”. Please read the declaration carefully to understand the terms and condition. You are to click on “I agree”, fill in your names in the spaces provided, answer the security question and click “Sign”.

A similar page to this one comes up, showing your names already filled in; click the “Transmit” button to submit your profile, to be accepted into the pool.

Next, you will see this confirmation page, which means your profile is now being processed to affirm your acceptance into the pool of Express Entry Candidate. Click on “Exit Questionnaire” and you will be taken to your account home page.

Once in your account, you can click on the “Check full application status” link to see if your profile has been updated with your CRS point or any other message regarding your submitted profile. You may have to wait for a few hours or days to see this update.

At this point, you are to wait for the next Express Entry draw when the minimum CRS point to receive an invitation to apply is announced; if you score equal to or above the announced CRS point, you will receive an invitation to apply!

Receiving an Invitation to Apply

If you received your invitation to apply after the 26th of June, you have within 60 days to finalize your application and submit.

On receiving the invitation to apply, you are required to fill supplementary online forms in your profile and provide additional documents including:

  • Proof of settlement funds – bank statements and reference letters from your bank
  • Police clearance certificates for you, your spouse and children older than 18 years old, from every country you have lived in for six months or more.
  • Reference letters – from all the companies you have worked with to gain your qualifying work experience
  • Proof of medicals – you need to undergo medical examination from hospitals recognized by the IRCC.

Once you have provided all documentation and information required, you will be required to pay the Right of Permanent Residence Fee and processing fees for you and your family members.

The processing fee is about CAD$550 each for principal applicant and spouse, while for their dependent children under the age of 18 it is CAD$150 each. The right of Permanent Residence Fee of CAD$490 is paid by principal applicant and spouse only when their application for permanent residence is approved.

Take note however that receiving an invitation to apply does not guarantee that you will get the immigrant visa; a few applicants still get denied the permanent residence visa even after receiving the invitation to apply.

If your application for permanent residence is successful, you will get an immigrant visa. You are expected to travel to Canada within the validity of your immigrant visa. You must have landed in Canada before your immigrant visas expired – on landing, you will get Record of Landing documents. Within weeks to months of landing in Canada, you will be sent your Permanent Residence Card, which is usually valid for 5 years.

The permanent residence card is equivalent to the green card, it allows you to live, work and study in Canada – you may also travel out of Canada and return without needing to apply for Canada visa.

As soon as you and your family members receive your permanent residence cards, you must each fulfill the requirements to maintain your status individually.

To renew your permanent residence card or status, you are required to fulfill certain obligations, chief of which is that you must have lived in Canada for a cumulative period of 730 days out of 5 years immediately preceding the date you sign the application and meet the other obligations.

You may also qualify to become a Canadian citizen; this has its unique set of obligations, which includes the condition that you must have lived in Canada for about 1,095 days during the 5 years immediately preceding the date you sign the application and meet the other obligations.

Processing Times

After you have submitted your application in response to your invitation to apply, the IRCC will begin to process your application.

The IRCC processes your application using the documents and information you have provided – it could take up to 6 months to process your application.

You will be contacted by the IRCC via your online account about their decision on your application.

Applicants who do not receive an invitation to apply, or whose application for permanent residence were not approved can only remain in the Express Entry pool for about a year, after which they will be dropped from the pool, they can recreate their profiles to return to the pool, as long as they still meet all minimum eligibility requirement.
